Journey to Transitions

Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.

– Albert Szent-Györgyi

We are about to announce a new program, Transition to Independence: Unlocking Special Abilities. Its genesis, structure, and content are primarily the work of one person. I think that it’s important that you know something about her.

People are story tellers. It is arguably how we communicate best. Some say that there is a universal story that goes something like:

A young person travels out into the world, is transformed, and uses the insights gained to make a difference, make the world a better place.

From my perspective, that is part of Rachel Hawkins’ story.

Rachel is a warm caring person. She is smart, sensitive, a successful master’s level college graduate. She is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to practice occupational therapy and certified to do so by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. She is the Founder and Director of Transition to Independence, a program to help teens and young adults with special needs become self-reliant and self-sufficient contributing members of society. Rachel is personable, sincere, courageous, and a joy and honor to work with.

Rachel is self-diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.

– Anatole France

Rachel is a colleague, a therapist, a friend, and an inspiration to all of us here at Creative. She is in the midst of that journey that is at the heart of the universal story. A journey that began with a childhood of being undiagnosed on the autism spectrum, supported by insightful and prescient parents—ahead of their time, of young adulthood facing and overcoming profound life challenges, and as a therapist developing a powerful passion to share the life lessons of her successful journey with kindred souls.

I know of no more encouraging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by conscious endeavor.

– Henry David Thoreau

Rachel is a trail blazer, creating a program to help others benefit from her successes, to learn from her attempts and failures and knowledge gained, to accomplish that which others may have said was not possible: purpose and independence.

Whether you are someone to take advantage of Transition to Independence now or in the future or are simply a curious bystander, I hope her story inspires you as it has inspired us.
