Rhythm and Timing
Timing is something we often take for granted. Taking a step requires the brain, feet and everything in between to be synchronized so that we don’t fall, let alone get from point A to point B. Reading a book or solving a math problem requires the eyes and brain to be in sync. Talking to a friend or family member without stumbling over words or hesitating unnecessarily is the same story—the brain, breath, and mouth need to work together in the correct order.
This is called “Neurotiming” and some individuals require training and conditioning to improve their neurotiming.
Interactive Metronome (IM) was developed in the early 1990s to improve neurotiiming. IM is a neuro-motor assessment and treatment tool. It is used therapeutically to improve the neurological processes of motor planning and sequencing.
The system combines cognitive tasks with specific movements to get the brain and the body “synced up.” IM measures and improves synchronization of neural impulses within key brain networks for cognitive, communicative, sensory and motor performance.
As the individual activates a trigger in time with a steady auditory beat, IM technology provides real-time auditory and visual feedback for millisecond timing. Knowing whether he or she is hitting before, after, or exactly in sync with the beat allows the individual to improve timing and rhythm.
IM helps children with learning and developmental disorders as well as adult neuro-rehabilitation patients.
