Developmental Disorders: Symptoms and Solutions Explained
As parents we want our children to succeed. We also want to protect our children—especially those with special needs. We might ask: what should we expect? how do we set the right challenge? can we require or expect too much? Perhaps we even wonder if success is out of reach.
While success might be more challenging for children with developmental disorders, it is reachable. The path begins with the parent’s belief in their child, and the child’s belief in themselves.
If your child or loved one has been diagnosed with a developmental disability—or you suspect one, there is help, treatment. Creative Health Solutions’ engagement begins with a thorough and comprehensive assessment. Creative’s therapists then help the child improve and solidify their foundational skills, this is followed by improving and facilitating the coordination of those skills, and finally assuring and achieving functional mastery and ultimate success.
Let’s start at the beginning.
“Developmental disorder” is defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language or behavior areas. They generally begin during the developmental period and may last throughout life. The severity can range from a mild hindrance to requiring specialized care.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), cerebral palsy CP), Rett syndrome, intellectual disabilities and learning disabilities (such as dyslexia) are common examples. Each are very different and all present as delays in certain skills.
Symptoms appear early in life. Missing early milestones such as pointing to objects, smiling, waving or walking could be an indication that your child has a developmental disorder or delay. All children develop differently and reach milestones at different rates. But those who fail to develop a skill within a reasonable time may be facing a larger issue. That’s why it is important to keep up with all pediatric checkups so a doctor can asses your child’s development.
It can be personally difficult to face the possibility that your child has a challenge, but assessing and treating developmental disorders sooner rather than later improves the quality of life fastest and provides the best likelihood for success. That being said, be careful to not guilt yourself for waiting. The most important step is to take action when you feel you’re ready and look ahead with hope and optimism. It’s never too late and we can always help.
Specialized Treatments in a Fun Environment
Creative Health Solutions’ wide range of therapeutic modalities address the specific developmental disorder affecting your child. Whether it’s autism, fine motor delay, ADHD or a learning disability, our licensed board-certified occupational and speech therapists specialize in comprehensive leading edge treatment that begins by addressing root causes.
Each child is unique. We thus begin with a through and comprehensive assessment, determine the root or underlying causes of the challenge, and address those first. We then thoroughly and systematically move up the developmental ladder. The environment we provide for this is connecting, caring, loving, and nurturing—because the people are.
Customized treatments include seamlessly-integrated occupational therapy and speech-language pathology. They address the underlying causes of the physical, emotional and social challenges presented by developmental disorders. One example, among many, are listening therapies that use sound and sometimes movement to create a foundation for learning, attention, processing and behavior.
We maximize the effectiveness of all our therapies by providing a fun, interactive, and participatory environment. Our 13 custom treatment rooms are furnished with the highest-quality equipment; we have a fully-equipped kitchen and dining room for feeding programs, and lots of natural light.
Creative is a place of healing and improvement for those with special needs and their families.
